The published CLAMP global database currently consists of leaf physiognomic and climate data from 378 locations from every continent except Antarctica. Sampling is currently sparse in Africa and South America and no ever-wet equatorial forests are represented. The altitudinal range of the samples spans from 0.5m to 3600m above sea level. This global dataset will hopefully continue to expand over time.

The image above shows sub-tropical and warm temperate vegetation in the foreground, cool temperate vegetation in the middle distance and icefields in the Himalaya in the far distance, typifying the range of climates and vegetation types encapsulated in the global data.

 

The global dataset should not be used to generate quantitative palaeoclimate estimates. For this reason we do not supply accompanying climate data. This is because CLAMP uses vectors that represent simple linear trends through leaf physiognomic space (the multidimensional cloud of modern vegetation sites) to represent leaf physiognomy/climate relationships. The structure of global physiognomic space is complex Spicer et al. (2021) and cannot be properly represented by straight line trends, so the uncertainties are high. However, the global data set is useful for selecting which part of physiognomic space an unknown fossil site is most similar to. Using this information the appropriate regional calibration can be selected for best quantifying the ancient climate represented by the fossil assemblage.
