Description

Leaf:  simple; symmetrical (?); shape unknown; apex missing; base shallowly lobate with a decurrent petiole junction, margin dentate except at the base where it is entire, teeth with angular acute apices and shallow rounded sinuses; venation basal (?) imperfect (?) actinodromous (?); primary midvein moderate, more or less straight; pectinal veins straight, slightly less thick than the midvein, arising at an angle of approximately 30° to the midvein; pectinal abmedial veins given off at angles of 35°, near base one pair of abmedials branched abmedially forming a weak b-pectinal; basal to the b-pectinal a-pectinal abmedials are recurved, may be branched; superior secondary veins straight arising at an angle of 30° to the midvein; tertiary veins indistinct.

Remarks

Unfortunately this leaf is so badly preserved and incomplete that detailed comparison with other hamamelid-like leaves is not possible. The leaf base is distinctive not only because of its morphology but also because of its venation.  Unlike many basally lobed or truncated hamamelid-like leaf forms the third order veins serving the lobes arise not from the midvein but from the base of the pectinals.  In this respect it is similar to many species within the genus Populites Viviani as illustrated by Hollick (1930) from his Yukon River localities.
