Sagavanirktok (B-3) Quad.
Sagwon section. Stratigraphically more or less equivalent to locality 11480, plant remains occurred in abundance in blocks of iron-cemented calcareous fine-grained sandstone weathering out approximately half way up the bluffs.
Description
Female cone: approximately 17 mm in diameter when open; scales opposite, retained on the cone axis after the seeds are shed, stalked; cone scales conical in longitudinal section; abaxial surface of expanded head undulate to concave.
Remarks
The cones are compressed and coalified and not sufficiently well presereved to afford detailed analysis. Nevertheless, the general morphology is consistent with them belonging to a species of Metasequoia. the pedunculate cones are apparently mature with oppositely arranged scales, which have been retained following shedding of the seeds.
