Description

Leaf:  simple; symmetrical; shape wide ovate (?); apex missing; base missing; margin dentate, teeth with obtuse angular apices and shallow rounded sinuses; venation perfect (?) marginal actinodromous; primary midvein moderate, more or less straight; pectinals weak, more or less straight, forming an angle of approximately 40° to the midvein, pectinal abmedials given off at angles of approximately 30°, uniformly curved, branched near margin, the most basal of these abmedials being frequently branched and giving off veins on the abmedial side forming a b-pectinal; superior secondary veins arising from the midvein parallel to the a-pectinals, moderate more or less straight or slightly curved and branched near the margin and terminating in the medial veins of the teeth; tertiary veins percurrent convex between the primary and secondary veins and convex, straight or sinuous between secondary veins, usually simple but sometimes forked forming angles of approximately 90° with both ad- and abmedial sides of the secondary veins; fourth order veins transverse orthogonal and often forked.

Remarks

The venation of this leaf may be palinactinodromous.  This is suggested by the lower pectinal abmedial being relatively strong and giving rise to subsidiary veins on its exmedial side; all of which are characteristics of a palinactinodromous b-pectinal vein.  There is also some evidence of lobing, or at least an inflation of margin, at the point where the a-pectinals terminate because the lamina extends beyond the line of the margin as defined by the margin immediately apical to this region in the specimen.  The teeth are typical of those found in 'platanoid' hamamelids.

With an incomplete specimen such as this, and particularly because the base is missing, it is difficult to make comparisons with published species.  The 'platanoid' forms to which this specimen might have an affiliation are Protophyllum preastans Lesquereux (1892, p. 188; Plate 42, Figs. 3, 4), those forms assigned to Pseudoprotophyllum in Hollick (1930), and those to Pseudoaspidiophyllum latifolium in Bell (1963).
