Description

Leaf:  simple; symmetrical; very wide ovate; apex obtuse; base missing; margin dentate, teeth with obtuse apices and shallow rounded sinuses, irregular in size and spacing; venation marginal imperfect actinodromous; primary midvein moderate but stout near the base, rapidly thinning near the apex, slightly uniformly curved; pectinal veins arising from the midvein at angles of 35°, moderate, more or less straight, joining the leaf margin approximately halfway between base and apex; pectinal abmedial veins given off at angles of 30-40°, straight or slightly curved and often branched near the margin, the more basal abmedials arising at greater angles than the others and arranged more or less perpendicular to the midvein; superior secondary veins arising from the midvein parallel to the pectinals, more or less straight and are branched near the margin on their abmedial sides; tertiary veins percurrent, usually simple, convex.

Remarks

Unfortunately the base, often the most diagnostic feature of these hamamelid-like leaves, is incomplete.  Nevertheless this leaf is noteworthy because of its comparatively well-organized venation.  The vein courses are regular and well defined.  Even the tertiary venation is simple and the veins regularly spaced by comparison to many other leaves of this type.  There is a slight inflation of the margin where the pectinal veins terminate.  Without the base present it is difficult to critically compare this specimen with other similar hamamelid-like leaves.
