Kukpowruk River

The map on the right shows the localities along the Kukpowruk River sampled both by Smiley (reported in Smiley 1969a), Spicer and Herman (1996) and by Bob and Andrew Spicer in 1998. Corwin Formation

Specimens:

Description. Light gray sandstone (the same as at locality 98RAS19) overlain by bentonitic mudstones with ironstones containing Podozamites, Desmiophyllum and long leafy shoots of sparsely leaved Cephalotaxopsis. Also ocurring are large Ginkgo leaves, highly dissected Ginkgo leaves, Taeniopteris(?) and possible Nilssoniopteris.

Angiosperms in the Kukpowruk River sections appear to be restricted to localities close to the axis of the Barabara Syncline and thus represent the youngest sediments exposed in this area. They appear to be equivalent to those in the Killik Tongue, possibly those in the uppermost lower Killik, but more likely the upper Killik. Bentonites are frequent but deeply weathered and were not sampled.
