Arctic Fossil Leptostrobalean Images

Leptostrobaleans refers to plant fossils assignable to the order Leptostrobales, sometimes also known as Czekanowskiales. Meyen (1987) argued that the term Leptostrobales was preferable because it was derived from the genus Leptostrobus that was established for fructifications, whereas Czekanowskia is a genus name applied to leaves. Other genera in the Leptostrobales are Phoenicopsis and Stenorachis. There are some superficial morphological similarities to the Ginkgophytes and missidentifications are possible.   Image of Czekanowskia leaves
